Golf: Race on for Brabazon title

ENGLAND Boys international Tommy Fleetwood will lead the local players attempting to qualify for this week’s Brabazon Trophy.

Two days of qualifying will precede the prestigious trophy, being held at Trevose in Cornwall, with an initial entry of 344 players from 20 different countries.

Cheshire county colleagues Craig Lewis (Prenton) and Josh Sims (Caldy) will be making the long trip south. Others taking part include Ian Kenwright (Haydock Park), Paul Jones (Royal Birkdale), Jonathan Little (Heswall), Tom Boys (Royal Liverpool), Adam Willis, Ashley Sage (Sandiway) and Scott Fitzgerald (Southport and Ainsdale).

England international Matthew Baldwin (Royal Birkdale) and under-21 squad member James Robinson (Southport and Ainsdale), winner of the Formby Hare last month, are exempt through to the main competition, which starts on Friday.

The Brabzon was inaugurated at Royal Birkdale in 1947.
