Golf: Footballers back goal of raising charity funds

FOOTBALL stars past and present have teamed up to support a golf day to raise funds for the children’s charity Stick ‘n’ Step.

Shirts signed by Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Everton’s Yakubu, Mikel Arteta, Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez and England star Michael Owen will form part of the auction at Pryors Hayes Golf Club, near Chester, on Sunday, June 8.

The charity, which supports children with cerebral palsy, is hoping to equal the 160-player field of golfers from last year’s event at Prenton Golf Club, which raised a much-needed £28,000.

Golfers will get a bargain 18 holes of golf, buffet lunch, on-course refreshment and the chance to win one of five team prizes for the £35 entrance fee.

In the evening comedian Willie Miller will compere the prize-giving and auction.

Local Suzuki and Mitsubishi dealers Grenson Motors are sponsoring the day with prizes for nearest the pins at every par three and a ‘Beat The Pro’ challenge.

Sky Sports football commentator Rob Palmer, whose 13-year-old son Ellis has attended Stick ‘n’ Step for five years, has called upon acquaintances from the sporting world to take part.

He said: “Over the past couple of years we have been joined by some legends and they are all promising to join us again if they are available.”
