Golf: Laura Jones is making her mark in States

CHESHIRE’S Laura Jones, twice the Cheshire Girls champion, has completed her first year at university in the United States by helping her team win a top college title.

The 18-year-old from Royal Liverpool was a key member of the Oklahoma City team which won the women’s championship of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for the fourth year in a row.

Laura was also picked for the all-tournament team. Oklahoma City finished three shots clear of the field at Lake San Marcos Country Club, California.

Laura was ninth overall and her team’s top scorer on the final day with a 79. She was one of only nine players, in a field of 120, who broke 80 in a day of harsh conditions of steady rain and gusting winds.Š

Laura, a winner of the Leveret Trophy before starting her university career, made an immediate impact on the university golf scene. Two months after joining Oklahoma City she won her first tournament.

She is a past member of an English Women’s Golf Association birdie squad and of the regional Select North squad.
