ROOKIE professional Martin Edge led the Leeds Cup west qualifier with a two-under-par 68 at Sale.
And the 19 years-old Hesketh assistant did it the hard way with an adventurous round.
After making a dream start with an eagle at the first hole, he then triple bogeyed the third to reach the turn in one over.
But he retrieved the situation by covering the home stretch in two under, thanks to birdies at the 12th, 15th and 16th.
Fellow assistants Martyn Hamer, from Ellesmere, and Matthew Marsh, from Hallowes, shared second place on 70.
A total of 28 players qualified for the Leeds Cup, professional golf’s oldest trophy, at Cobble Hall on August 19-21.
LEADING SCORES: 68 Martin Edge (Hesketh); 70 Martyn Hamer (Ellesmere), Matthew Marsh (Hallowes); 71 Phil Kelly (St Annes Old Links); 72 John Cheetham (Marriott Worsley Park), Nick Deme (Brookdale), Jon Haines (Drivetime)
