Golf: Cheshire long on short success

THE golf boys of Cheshire continue to reign supreme in the Four Counties Tournament.

Following the success story of Cheshire Boys, winners 12 times, including four in the last seven years, the county under-14 team retained the Four Counties Short Course Championship at Broughton Heath, Derbyshire.

Cheshire’s under-14 have won the championship each year since the start three years ago.

The tournament format was two medal rounds over 18 holes with the best five scores out of six counted.ŠAfter the first round Cheshire held a five-shot lead over Staffordshire, a late replacement for Worcestershire.

In the second round, Cheshire finished with an impressive 32-shot leadŠover Nottinghamshire.

Cheshire Boys team manager Mike Jones praised an excellent team performance, with a special tribute to the performance of Lewis George from Crewe, the youngest member of the Cheshire team at 11 years 4 months, who returned the best 36 holes score ofŠnine over par.

“A truly outstanding performance from this young player,” said Jones.

CHESHIRE: James Newton (Prestbury), Andrew Crosby (Caldy), Jordan Jones (Frodsham), Haydn McCullen (Didsbury) Cameron Massey (Chorlton-cum- Hardy), Lewis George (Crewe).

FINAL SCORES: Cheshire 608, Nottinghamshire 640, Staffordshire 642; Derbyshire 648.
