Golf: Robinson wins Bahrain role

FOUR early birdies got Sean Doherty off to a flying start to the Automatic Retailing PGA North Region Championship west qualifying round at Fleetwood.

The 24-year-old from Bury, a regular on the EuroPro Tour, posted a five-under-par 67 to lead the 43 players who earned the right to compete in the main event at Burgham Park, near Morpeth, on July 23-25.

Among them was Caldy assistant Martin Robinson, who was also celebrating landing a teaching job in Bahrain which he will take up later in the year.

His 68 was matched by Paul Grannell, from Pryors Hayes.
