Golf: Glenn Turner takes on new golfing marathon

MARATHON golfer Glenn Turner is off on his travels in aid of charity again - but this time he hopes to be done and dusted in a day.

The Guinness Book of Records holder for the most 18 hole golf courses played in a single year – a total of 383 – is planning to play just four this week.

But the four ‘royal’ destinations on his itinerary are in four different countries.

Turner, who is director of golf at the North West National Golf and Country Club which is under construction at Rainford, near St Helens, is taking part in the longest day golf challenge on Thursday with the aim of raising £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. His plan is to start at dawn in Northern Ireland at Royal Portrush before flying to Royal Troon in Scotland, Royal St David's in Wales before landing at Royal Liverpool at teatime to play his final round over the Hoylake links, where he will be joined by former Liverpool footballer Ian St John.

“I lost both my parents to cancer with six months of each other,” said Glenn, “so this is a cause close to my heart.”
