Early start for Archer after he just makes it

WARRINGTON’S Phil Archer just made the cut on nine over par after struggling on the way home.

He birdied the fifth and ninth and bogied the seventh and eighth to be out in 34.

Then after parring the 10th he bogied five out of the next six holes, picking up his only birdie at the long 15th. Nine over par, he needed to par the last two which he duly did, two putting from 45ft on the final green.

He said: “It was such a struggle, a complete battle out there.

“I got on a bogey run coming home and couldn’t find my swing, but then fortunately it came back for the last couple of holes.”

Archer will be the first player out in today’s third round when he sets off on his own at 7.30am.

Styal’s David Horsey had a fantastic birdie-eagle-birdie finish for a level par second round 70 and at 144 for two rounds is just five behind the leader. He said: “I played really well and made it to the weekend, but I’m here to win it.”

He will be out with 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson at 12.55pm.

Bromborough golfer Paul Waring tees off at 11.30am with South African Thomas Aiken, while Liverpool’s Nick Dougherty will be with France’s Gregory Havret at 12.25pm.
