Grewal’s prize double as Liverpool finish third

Sandeep Grewal

HESWALL’S Sandeep Grewal returned a four under card to lead the professionals in the individual section in the National Alliance Championship at Wollaton Park, Nottinghamshire.

Grewal also claimed first place in the pro-am with amateur partner David Owens from Helsby with a team score of 44 points.

The Liverpool Alliance were the early clubhouse leaders in the main championship but were overtaken by Derbyshire, 2008 winners of the John Dowd Trophy. The trophy is named after the president of the Manchester Alliance who had the idea of a national championship for the Alliance in 2001.

Liverpool finished level on 163 points with the Nottingham Alliance but were placed third on a card play-off. They were represented by Martin Edge, Will Sum (Hesketh); Robin Carroll (West Derby), Jim Smith (Caldy); James Sharpe (Royal Liverpool), Gary Staniford (Eaton); Ian Finnis (Formby Hall), Steve Hudson (Blundells Hill); Ian Robertson (Wirral Ladies), Dave Dawrant (Eaton).

BROMBOROUGH players were celebrating with prize winners in all three sections in the Liverpool Alliance at Portal.

Amateur Alex Evans, playing off scratch, beat the professionals to top the individual section with 40 points, two clear of Heswall’s Sandeep Grewal and Kevin Hartley from Runcorn.

Evans, back in 32 – 22 points in a nine that included four birdies – was quick to give credit to Bromborough professional colleague Tim Backhouse.

“He sorted out my putting last week,” he reported.

Backhouse, with father Rod, shared equal first place in the pro-am with Nick Sargent and Pat Vesey from Eastham Lodge, both pairs with 42 points.
