Pre-Budget report: We need action now - not more talk

Tax cuts for all is not a practical idea

IAN BURTON, corporate finance director of Liverpool accountant Duncan Sheard Glass, thinks the Government should focus on building confidence in the housing sector through measures such as mortgage relief, rather than on short-term tax cuts that may not boost the economy.

He said: "The housing market is a huge driver for the economy as a whole. It is difficult to import a manufactured house, requiring the labour costs to be spent in the UK and securing jobs here in Great Britain. The benefit of these tax cuts would thus be multiplied many times throughout the economy.

"While tax cuts for all is a nice idea, it is not a practical idea, given the existing Treasury budget imbalance we have."
