Martyn Best of Paver Smith
MARTYN BEST co-founded Paver Smith with Dougal Paver in 2006. He is also chairman of Everton Tigers, vice-chairman of the Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants, a trustee of the Everton Former Players Foundation and helps the NSPCC Business Group.
Martyn, 53, lives near Southport and this was his working day.
6.10am: Alarm goes and no time for the snooze button today. I leave wife Mally and four-year-old daughter Grace dozing, shower and head into Liverpool. If there’s a banana around, that’s breakfast in the car.
7am: Arrive at the Plaza. There are some stunning sunrises from our 14th-floor office, which only highlights what a great city Liverpool is. Have coffee with the other early birds in the office.
8.15am: The office livens up, and banter on Everton or Liverpool’s results gets the day moving.
8.30am:An early email for us, but not for them, from our PR partner in Shanghai. Some good coverage opportunities regarding the forthcoming Expo 2010.
9.30am: The weekly business development meeting gives a good insight into our progress in attracting new clients.
We try not to view ourselves as just PR practitioners, we’re business people, and we look to ensure that all our team is involved in selling and developing. Our 36% growth last year was down to this philosophy.
10.30am: Receive a call from Tony Garbelotto, head coach of Everton Tigers, to discuss the marketing plans for the two Tigers games scheduled for February at the Echo Arena. Tony plans to come in later.
11.30am:Rippleffect, the website and digital agency, are in to review further enhancements to our website. It’s vital that we keep our own website as vibrant as possible, and integrate many of the new digital and social media developments.
12.30pm:Lunchtime beckons, as the banana for breakfast is but a distant memory. While a small walk is necessary, Dougal Paver and I opt for a working lunch at newly-opened The Noble House.
2pm: Meet with The PC Support Group to discuss improving our IT links with our Manchester office. Our growth over the last year or two has really stretched our servers, so we’re looking at a radical new approach with out-sourced servers which will also improve remote access.
3pm:A good conference call with Noemi Mas, from the European Former Football Players’ Association. We are working with them on a two-day conference and gala dinner, and the first ever EFPA Champions Cup five-a-side tournament at the Echo Arena in mid-April.
3.30pm:Tony Garbelotto pops in to discuss those two Echo Arena games and to help us further develop a new Hoops4Health social marketing campaign aimed at 13 to 16-year-olds.
4.30pm: What would a good agency be without some minor indulgences, and today is Bubbles Wednesday – a few bottles of Saniger Cava from the Purple Wine company always livens up the mid-week malaise.
5.30pm:A quick pint with a few colleagues and then off to see Merry Ding Dong, a great Christmas play.
11.20pm: Just manage to catch that last train home and see Mally for a quick catch-up on the day.
