Working day: Developing healthier business in the city

Paul Gambon, Business Development Manager at Medicash

Paul Gambon is business development manager at healthcare cash plan providers Medicash. Paul lives in a listed Victorian apartment in Waterloo. This was his working day:

7.15am: After putting the alarm on snooze a couple of times, I dive into the shower before heading downstairs for toast and a cup of strong, sweet coffee.

7.45am: Make the 30-second commute to my office downstairs, go online and check my emails. I look at my diary, prepare for meetings and run through the presentations I’m giving.

9am: Meet with one of our key customers, the Big Lottery Fund, at their north-west headquarters in Manchester.

They have been with Medicash for almost two years now and pay for more than 800 of their staff to have a healthcare cash plan.

This is a review meeting, so we go through their claims history and it’s a pleasure getting feedback from staff.

We also discuss the communication programme for the forthcoming year to ensure staff are aware of all the benefits available through their plan.

11.30am: Working lunch with our sales and marketing director and the marketing manager about prospective customers.

An update on existing clients follows, and it’s always satisfying to hear about customers who have found that absenteeism rates have reduced since signing up to Medicash.

1pm: Looking after the health of employees during tough economic times is currently a hot topic, so I am preparing a presentation to HR managers on how they can affordably achieve this, as recent talks for the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce have gone down well.

2pm: Speak to a law firm who want to save money on their private medical insurance without reducing the benefits staff receive.

I arrange an appointment to see them and tell them more about Medicash.

3pm: Tackle tender requests from both brokers and clients. We are getting more of these as many companies are looking to include healthcare benefits within their upcoming pay negotiations.

4.30pm: Catch up with our PR agency. We are discussing clients to approach for case studies where we can demonstrate their business success is linked to a proactive and successful approach to their employees’ health.

5.30pm: I’m a panel member of Waves Enterprise, the Sirolli project for Central and South Liverpool. We discuss how we can help small businesses who have asked us for advice on recession-related issues and who can help them.

7:30pm: Have just enough energy to cycle to the gym along the beach front and do a work-out. Getting that blast of sea air is really invigorating.

8.30pm: Back home I rustle up a quick dinner as it’s been a long day, so make myself a salmon fillet wrapped in Parma ham on a bed of sweet chilli noodles. Finally, I can unwind by watching a bit of TV and then catch up on Facebook and LinkedIn.
