TRANSPORT Minister Rosie Winterton was briefed on Peel Ports’ plans for a £90m Post Panamax container terminal on the Mersey during a visit to the Port of Liverpool to discuss development of rail, road and waterborne links.
Ms Winterton visited the site of the river terminal for the new generation of giant container ships, after announcing £1.7m Government funding to enhance rail access to the port.
She was appraised of both rail and road schemes included in Peel Ports’ comprehensive plans for the Port of Liverpool and the Manchester Ship Canal.
She was also given details of the recent initiative to take container traffic off the roads and tranship it by barge between Liverpool’s Royal Seaforth Terminal and the heart of the North West region via the Ship Canal.
Peel Ports’ plans for the Post Panamax container terminal were approved by the Department of Transport last March and are now the subject of planning prior to the start of construction in 2008.
