Nuclear plans welcomed by NWDA

NORTHWEST Development Agency chief executive Steven Broomhead has welcomed the Government’s decision to build a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK.

Mr Broomhead said that given the concentration of nuclear industry sites in the North West – particularly in Warrington and Cumbria – the region’s economy could reap the benefits.

He added: “The North West, and west Cumbria in particular, is home to over 50% of the UK’s civil nuclear workforce and the vast majority of its research excellence.

“The region has a vital role to play in ensuring that the UK maintains its competitiveness in this area and the news is very encouraging.”

Business Secretary John Hutton told MPs last week the plants were a “safe and affordable” way of securing future energy supplies while fighting climate change.
