Fight on to save jobs at glass firm

ADMINISTRATORS of the collapsed Liverpool firm Greenberg Glass Contracts last night said they were talking to a number of possible buyers for the business.

The company, part of the Greenberg Glass Group, was placed into administration yesterday putting 200 jobs at risk.

Greenberg Glass Contracts, based at Wellington Business Park in the north of the city, supplies internal glazing to major commercial and retail developments around the UK.

The Manchester office of administrator MCR has been appointed to manage its affairs.

A separate business, Greenberg Glass Emergency, which operates from Huddersfield, is not affected by the administration and continues to trade normally. It employs 300 people and provides emergency replacement glass to many of the most famous names in British retailing.

Last night MCR said it was in talks with a number of possible buyers but added: “It is too early to say whether a successful sale of the business can be achieved.

LDP Business understands that Beryl Greenberg and other directors have been working around the clock for the past two weeks trying to secure the future of the group.

They have been able to ensure the survival of Greenberg Glass Emergency, but by the end of last week it was becoming clear they would be unable to save the contracts division.

The Greenberg Group, one of Liverpool’s best-known private businesses, has spent the last 18 months going through an extensive restructuring programme, which included dividing the contracts and emergency divisions into two businesses.

While the emergency business continues to thrive, the contracts division has fallen victim to difficult market conditions.

It has been involved in internal glass work at some of Liverpool’s most high profile developments including 20 Chapel Street, the Metquarter, Sandhills station and the £17m Liverpool Aquatics Centre.

“The directors are fighting to keep the contracts business going and are doing everything to save the jobs of our loyal and hard-working staff,” said Ms Greenberg.

The company which has gone onto administration is Greenberg Group, which trades as Greenberg Glass.
