70 staff redundant at collapsed glass firm

ADMINISTRATORS at Greenberg Glass Contracts yesterday made 70 staff redundant.

The firm, part of the Greenberg Glass Group, collapsed into administration on Tuesday morning.

David Whitehouse and Philip Duffy, partners at the Manchester office of insolvency specialist MCR, have been appointed to manage its affairs.

Yesterday, MCR revealed that 70 people out of the 170-strong workforce had lost their jobs, but that efforts were being made to secure the future of those that remained.

They said they were in discussions with a number of possible buyers.

Mr Whitehouse said: “Increasingly difficult financial and market conditions have contributed to the company’s present situation. We will undertake a full analysis of the business to establish how returns to creditors can be maximised.

“The administrators continue to trade the business and are currently speaking with a number of interested parties and intend to actively market the business, although it is too soon to determine whether a successful sale of the business will be achieved.”

The firm, based at Wellington Business Park, in the north of the city, supplies internal glazing to major commercial and retail developments around the UK.

A separate business, Greenberg Glass Emergency, which operates from Huddersfield, is not affected by the administration and continues to trade normally.

It employs 300 people and provides emergency replacement glass to many of the most famous names in British retailing and controls around 70% of the national market.

The Greenberg family started the glazing firm back in 1936 and the name remains one of the most well- known in the Liverpool business community.

Greenberg Glass Contracts has undertaken work at some of the city’s most high-profile projects, including the Metquarter and Rumford’s city centre Unity development.

Earlier this year, it completed glass work on the £17m Liverpool Aquatics Centre, in the south of the city. The firm installed 1,800 square metres of glass panels.
