MERSEYSIDE’S business community is being urged to take part in a survey on why they give to good causes.

The Community Foundation for Merseyside, which supports good causes throughout the region, has launched The Merseyside Philanthropy Questionnaire 2008/9.

It has teamed up with the Daily Post and its website www.ldpbusiness.co.uk to promote the survey and encourage businesses to take part.

The foundation wants to encourage more businesses to give to good causes. It wants to find out what they give at the moment, why they give and how efficient they find the process of giving.

The survey findings will be published in February.

The Community Foundation this year launched the Merseyside Cultural Legacy Fund to support art and culture activities beyond Liverpool’s year as Capital of Culture. The fund is being backed by Royal Liver, which is encouraging other businesses to donate to make sure the momentum of 2008 continues into next year.

The foundation’s assistant chief executive Cathy Elliott said: “We are currently researching current trends and motivations in philanthropy in Merseyside. There has been a small amount of research nationally but in order to get to grips with issues and needs of current and potential philanthropists, it is vital that local research is carried out in order to discover attitudes and trends towards philanthropic giving.

“We aim particularly to look at professional advisors’ experiences of clients engaging with philanthropy, as well as identifying emerging trends in this area.”
