Jobs expansion at Birkenhead site of survival clothing specialist Shark

A BIRKENHEAD specialist clothing factory has recruited 20 extra staff and is looking at longer term growth.

Shark Group, part of Belfast-based Survitec, provides survival wear for the military, marine, aerospace and homeland security markets.

It announced the expansion of its Beaufort Street site in Birkenhead, taking total staffing to 158, after shutting another factory in Northumberland, with the loss of 28 jobs.

The closure follows cutbacks in some of Survitec’s European operations.

But group operations director Brian Stringer said Birkenhead had been earmarked for further potential expansion as part of the shake-up.

He told LDP Business: “We are reviewing going forward and looking at other opportunities that might be available for that plant.

“We are looking to grow our business globally, even in the current environment.”

The Birkenhead site provides a range of defence-related clothing, including pilot and flight equipment.

Survitec employs about 1,000 in Europe, America, Australia and Japan.
