Currency fluctuations hit Speke drugs plant Novartis parent

PHARMACEUTICALS giant Novartis reported falling revenues and profits for the first quarter, due to fluctuations in currency rates.

The Swiss-based group, which employs 700 staff at its Speke site producing flu vaccines, revealed net sales for the first quarter were £6.7bn compared with £6.83bn.

Operating income also fell, from £1.71bn to £1.62bn.

Its Speke site is working on a potential vaccine to combat bird flu.
