FRANK ROBOTHAM has quit Peel Ports after 31 years with the business.
The marketing director was a key figure in plans to create a £100m in-river berth for the biggest container ships in the world, known as post-Panamax vessels.
The company has yet to decide when those proposals are going ahead, and deny Mr Robotham’s departure has any connection.
Peel Ports group chief executive, Stephen Baxter, said Mr Robotham decided to leave “to pursue other interests.”
He said: “Frank will leave the company in July and until then I will be working closely with him to ensure a smooth handover. “In particular, I will be picking up the key customer contacts until we hire a new group marketing director.”
A spokesman added Mr Robotham's resignation was not linked to the plans for the terminal for post-Panamax ships at Seaforth.
The marketing chief championed the ambitious plan and said it would take 800,000 lorries off the roads.
