Airbus Broughton offers apprentices an extra year

SEVENTY third-year apprentices at the Airbus Broughton factory, near Chester, are being offered the chance to stay on for a fourth year after cutbacks meant there are no jobs immediately available at the wingmaking factory.

The site is currently shedding 250 agency and core workforce jobs after a downturn in orders caused by the slump in global aviation market.

Nearly 100 apprentices are coming to the end of what would in other times be their third and final year. Twenty-seven of them are engineering apprentices who will join the workforce.

But the 70 craft apprentices are to spend a fourth year on the apprenticeship.
