Aggregate Industries completes takeover of Liverpool firm

INTERNATIONAL construction and building materials firm Aggregate Industries has completed the acquisition of a Liverpool-based company.

Aggregate has bought civil engineering and road surfacing specialist, Rand Road Surfacing, for an undisclosed sum.

Formed 15 years ago by David O’Sullivan and Michael Lawson, Rand employs a team of more than 40 staff, comprising both office and site-based professional and operational team members.

The company, which has a turnover of £3.5m a year, has established itself as a North West leader in the road surfacing sector and has diversified in recent years to encompass civil, hard and soft landscaping as well as motorways and runways.

The firm carries out work for main contractors, as well as a number of councils across the North West, acting also as an independent contractor on smaller schemes.

Ernie Sciarillo, operations director of Rand Road Surfacing, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the business to become part of a major industry player, giving us the support, professional experience and in-depth market knowledge we need in order to take our business to the next level.

“We have already developed and begun to implement an ambitious five year plan which will see us enjoy significant growth, penetrating new markets and working with a wider spread of customers.”

Mr Sciarrillo was recently the subject of the LDP Business profile. The 41-year-old joined Rand in 2000, after spending his whole working life at his father’s road surfacing firm in North Wales.

As a keen golfer, one of the jobs he was most proud of was a major resurfacing of the walkways around Royal Birkdale, just prior to the course hosting the British Open last year.

“That was a very high-specification job,” he said.
