NEW figures suggest that the downturn in the construction sector could be softening.
The Office for National Statistics reveals that the total volume of construction output, in the second quarter of 2009, fell by 0.5% to £23.86bn, compared with the first quarter of 2009.
This small fall follows a large fall in the first quarter of 2009 of 8%, to £23.98bn, from £26bn.
All new work rose by 1% to £9.95bn, while repair and maintenance fell by 2% to £4.98bn.
The total volume of construction output in the 12 months, to the second quarter of 2009, fell by 10% compared with the previous 12 months
