Liverpool charity CALM calls on businesses to help save lives

LIVERPOOL charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) is appealing to Liverpool firms to help it save lives.

Up to 50 young men take their lives on Merseyside each year, and the charity provides support for troubled young men aged between 15-35.

As part of its 10th anniversary plans next year, it wants to work closely with companies to reduce stress among their staff.

And it plans to launch a text service, CALM Xtra, offering incentives, such as cinema and football match tickets or gym and travel passes to boost the mental wellbeing of clients.

CALM co-ordinator Simon Howes said by working with youth brands, such as Liverpool superclub Cream and football clubs, the charity has become the “hotline of choice” among its target group.

“We have designed the service with their feedback,” he said.

“Blokes don’t like going to the doctor’s. Unless their arm falls off they will look after themselves, but we have empowered young men to say: ‘I don’t feel great and I’m going to get it sorted’. Our slogan is ‘Being silent isn’t being strong’.

“We want to have conversations with Merseyside businesses and ask them, what can you do to help support young men?”
