Twopence tale set in 1930s depression is a 21st-century money-spinner

TWO Liverpool businessmen have turned Twopence into £2m in just five years.

Rob and Alan Fennah, of Pulse Records and Productions, are the producers of Twopence to Cross the Mersey, the musical based on a book by Helen Forrester.

Rob Fennah said: “Considering the show will only have been staged for seven weeks in total, hitting £2m at the box office in such a short space of time is a real achievement.”

The show has been watched by 80,000 since its first performance in 2004, but its popularity is showing no signs of waning, and it returns to the Liverpool Empire next week.

Hannah Ashdown, general manager of the Empire Theatre, said: “Twopence to Cross the Mersey is one of the most successful shows to appear at this theatre in recent years.

“People are even travelling from as far as Japan and Australia to come and see it. We are delighted to have supported this great production from the start.”
