Ethel Austin expands in Scotland

DISCOUNT chain Ethel Austin has opened a store in one of the most northerly points in the United Kingdom.

The Knowsley-based chain has taken over a redundant Woolworths shop in Thurso – around 20 miles from John O’Groats.

It has also occupied another store in nearby Wick and a third farther down the coast at Fife.

Scot Elaine McPherson, who took over the ailing chain last year, said: “Having been born in Scotland, I’m delighted to be bringing the Ethel Austin brand to the north of the country.

“We have a loyal customer base throughout the UK and we are sure the people of Wick and Thurso will enjoy the Ethel Austin shopping experience.”

She believes the stores’ budget prices could fare well in a consumer spending slowdown.

The addition to the 300-plus stores portfolio also marks the 75th birthday of the business founded by Ethel Austin in Anfield.
