Merseyrail pledges not to increase train fares from January despite industry-wide rise

"How many people would guess the average price paid for a single train journey comes in at around £5 and the vast majority of people travel on some form of discounted travel?

"Record performance, better services and value for money fares have contributed to the highest number of passengers travelling by rail for 60 years.

"The January fare change means rail travel continues to be good value for money when compared with cars and planes."

Train companies said the low increase was down to two factors.

First, around two in five tickets are pegged to July’s inflation figure, meaning they are set to fall by 0.4%.

Secondly, some of the remaining fares have been frozen or in a number of cases reduced.
