Greggs celebrates festive trading cheer but warns conditions remain tough

BAKERY chain Greggs said it sold more than a million mince pies each week of the festive period.

Comparative sales during the four weeks to December 26 grew 1.1%, while Christmas week was described as a "very strong performance," by chief executive Ken McMeikan, with a 4.4% increase.

But the firm, which plans to open 50 to 60 new stores this year as part of an "accelerated" expansion programme, said the overall trading environment remained difficult.
