North West exporters outperforming the rest of the UK

NORTH-WEST exporters are out-performing those from the rest of the UK, according to a new study.

An analysis of official ONS figures by Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has revealed that, between the second and third quarters of 2009, firms in the region increased the value of their exports by £776m (14%).

This increase was higher than the increase in the value of exports across the whole of the UK in the same period of £723m (1%).

In addition, the average value of goods sold abroad per exporter in the North- West increased by 21% between Q2 and Q3, 2009, rising to £1.4m. Nationally, the increase was 6%, rising to £1.132m.

Bill Ratcliffe, managing director of business & commercial banking for RBS and NatWest in the North West, said: “Exporting can seem a complex activity with a lengthy order to cash cycle.

“In addition to having a strong product that appeals to overseas markets, you need to be able to assess your prospective customer’s credit standing, as well as cross-border collection risks.

“You also need to have a strong understanding of the specific risks you face.”
