In 1997, JLA flew to just three scheduled destinations. Now it offers 75 through a range of airline operators including the two biggest, Ryanair and Easyjet, who last year dealt a blow to JLA’s closest rival, East Midlands, when it ceased operations there.
Peel said it sees passenger growth continuing at JLA and is currently working on a £12m expansion of security and passenger facilities at the site to cope with increased throughput.
However, parent group Peel Holdings is currently in prolonged negotiations with Vancouver Airport Services over the possible sale of a majority stake in its airports division.
Also, Peel last week broke cover to reveal itself as part of a consortium bidding for Forth Ports and it is believed a sale of its airport assets could yield up to £200m towards the estimated £612m offer for the Forth Ports business.
