A RECORD-BREAKING Christmas at Liverpool One’s John Lewis store helped its parent post improved annual figures.
The John Lewis and Waitrose supermarket group reported a 6.5% sales rise in the year to January 30 of £7.4bn. Profits before tax and bonuses were 9.7% up at £306.6m, giving its 70,000 staff, or partners, a £151.3m bonus pot worth 15% of salary, or nearly eight weeks’ pay.
Margaret Jacques, managing director of John Lewis Liverpool, said: “After a challenging start to the year, we achieved a record-breaking Christmas and clearance.
“It is down to the hard work and enthusiasm of all 800 partners in our branch who delivered a fantastic Christmas in terms of both the look and feel of the shop and the overall customer experience.” Waitrose saw operating profits before property gains rise 26.8% to £268.2m on gross revenues up 9% to £4.5bn.
John Lewis said its department stores “emerged powerfully from the recession”. Gross sales were up 2.8% to £2.9bn,while operating profits excluding property gains increased 15% to £165.9m.
Chairman Charlie Mayfield said: “Partners have shown tremendous commitment during changing times. I am delighted our partners will share a bonus of £151.3m.”
