FASHION entrepreneur Chris Lee is used to spotting trends for the high street, but readily admits that he was less adept at planning his finances.
The former Wade Smith, Reebok and JJB Sports executive set up Microbrands One after he secured a deal to launch Slazenger Heritage, a brand of clothing based on the international label’s sports-influenced styles.
He previously ran Bold Street store Microzine, which closed in 2009.
For his latest venture, Mr Lee contacted Business Link Northwest and was paired up with digital and creative adviser, Howard Fleming. He was keen to find out more about the support available for his new venture in areas including funding, training and growth.
Mr Lee said: “I don’t think it’s easy for any business to find the right sort of assistance without firm guidance from someone ‘in the know’.
“I felt I’d been let down in the past by several organisations who claimed to be able to offer support.
“I’m confident about many areas of my business, but accept that I do need support with financial planning and staff development.”
Microbrands One was granted a £50,000 loan from the Northwest Regional Development Agency’s Small Loans for Business initiative to assist with cash flow and product development.
Mr Fleming said: “I referred Chris to UK Trade & Investment as he’s keen to look at opportunities to begin exporting his products to the European market during the next 12 months.”
