Specialist driving school takes to the road

TINA PRESTON has conquered her disability to set up a specialist driving school aimed at the 23.5% of Merseysiders living with a disability or limiting illness.

Three years ago, Ms Preston, from Dovecot, was struck down by a sudden illness affecting her immune system, severely limiting her job as a specialist driving instructor dealing with people with dyslexia and dyspraxia.

But now, together with colleagues Amanda Smith and Jo Webster, she has established Diverse Road Safety, a not-for-profit community interest company using a fully-adapted vehicle for teaching people with disabilities how to drive.

She said as her health deteriorated she became aware of problems facing disabled people in their dealings with the Driving Standards Agency and the Driving & Vehicle Licensing Agency which meant that they might not know what assistance is available and how to access it.
