Liverpool has a ball to kickstart its Shanghai Expo month of culture

LIVERPOOL kicked off its culture, health and sport month at the World Expo by holding a football day.

All visitors to Liverpool’s pavilion who were wearing a Liverpool FC or Everton FC shirt were entered into a prize draw to win a signed Liverpool football.

The winner was Shanghai student Chang Zhi Chao, who said: “I hadn’t even been to the Expo before today, but when I found out about the chance to win a ball signed by the players of my favourite team I had to visit, and I am so glad I did.”

Oliver Hayakawa, Liverpool’s pavilion director, said: “We were really pleasantly surprised at the size of the turn-out and really pleased that a genuine Liverpool fan won the ball.”

Although the World Expo got off to an uncertain start, with just 1.1m visitors in the first week, the crowds have picked up and are now averaging 350,000 people a day. At that level more than 60m people will visit the Expo during its six months.

Liverpool is the only UK city exhibiting at the event, which lasts until October.
