VIRGIN Trains, which operates the Liverpool to London link, is the most improved operator for the fourth month in a row.
New figures from Network Rail show the company improved its service on the West Coast mainline by 8.1% to 90.4% in June, compared with the same time last year.
Network Rail director of operations Robin Gisby said: “The figures speak for themselves and confirm that the West Coast is no longer the problem route people believe it to be.
“However, we can never let up on delivering good train performance, because passengers tell us this is the single most important thing to them.”
The route had been plagued by delays due to regular weekend engineering works.
Meanwhile, Merseyrail, with a score of 96.2%, was pipped by London operator c2c’s 97% as the most efficient operator of all 19 major companies. The UK average was 93%.
Merseyrail’s performance was an improvement on the 95.9% it achieved in June, 2009.
