91 Northwest Development Agency jobs go as almost 300 public sector staff face the axe

Broomhead

GOVERNMENT spending cuts have resulted in 100 redundancies at two key economic development agencies in the past few days.

Most of the job losses will be at regeneration body the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA), where 91 staff were told the bad news on Thursday. Another seven will go from The Mersey Partnership (TMP).

The NWDA job losses come as the Warrington-based organisation attempts to rebalance its books after the coalition Government stripped £52m from its current budget.

And, once the strategic spending review is announced on October 20, outlining the huge scale of public sector cuts to rein in the UK’s massive deficit, more NWDA jobs will be phased out ahead of the planned 2012 closure of all the England and Wales regional development agencies (RDAs).

The coalition wants to replace RDAs with Local Enterprise Partnerships, controlled by a combination of local authorities and businesses.
