iPhone apps created for Mobos, Biennial and Design Festival

THREE of the biggest events in Liverpool’s creative calendar have signed up three Liverpool software developers to create promotional iPhone apps.

Apposing has created an app for this year’s Liverpool Biennial arts festival.

Newly-formed Tokyo Digital developed an app for the MOBO Awards, held at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Wednesday.

And Citrus Suite is now developing an iPhone app for next month’s Liverpool Design Festival.

Around 10m apps every day are now being downloaded from Apple’s App Store.

Chris Morland, development director of Liverpool-based Citrus Suite, said he expected the market for mobile apps would keep growing as brands and organisations looked for new ways to promote themselves.

He said: “Liverpool has built a solid reputation as a creative hub, so local business can easily take advantage of the digital economy.

“Mobile marketing will be as revolutionary for business as the internet was in the 90s. If brands want global recognition, they need to ride this next wave of technology.”

Liverpool Design Festival runs from Thursday, November 18, to Saturday, November 27, and features events including exhibitions, fashion shows, films, and seminars.

Organisers at Liverpool-based Design Initiative hope to attract 80,000 people to the event, many of whom will use the new app.

Mr Morland said: “Festival-goers are tech-savvy and now expect to get apps for free. Making information accessible, and enabling social media, greatly enhances their experience and radically raises an event’s profile.”

Design Festival project manager Elaine Caldwell said: ‘It makes sense to use a design icon, such as the iPhone, to spread the message about contemporary design.

“The app adds exciting dimensions to our campaign, and will allow a large section of our audience to keep up to speed with the festival programme by simply tapping a screen.

“It feeds news directly to our visitors’ hands, helping them select favourite events and plan their own schedule.”

Liverpool agency Apposing, led by Dave Brown and Lee Omar, released its Biennial app last month. It includes images, videos, maps and information about featured artists .

Apposing was recently signed up to create apps for former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher’s clothing label, Pretty Green.

Tokyo Digital, which was created in August after a reorganisation at Liverpool’s Switch Media, announced in August that it was to create the MOBO app. The MOBO event attracted stars including rapper Tinie Tempah and boy band JLS to Liverpool this week.
