Bus operator Stagecoach’s Liverpool contactless payment system wins national award

A CONTACTLESS payment system used on the Merseyside fleet of bus company Stagecoach has won the Innovation category at the 2010 UK Bus Awards.

The RBS WorldPay’s project – a world-first launched in partnership with credit card provider MasterCard – was hailed for its ease and convenience for passengers to pay for bus services.

It allows Stagecoach customers to pay for their bus travel by simply tapping their contactless enabled debit or credit cards on a hi-tech reader on board the vehicle.

The money is then automatically debited from the cardholder’s account, meaning passengers no longer have to fumble for cash or coins.

It is the first time a contactless payment scheme of this kind has been made available for on-bus payments. The project is live on around 170 Stagecoach buses in Liverpool.
