Survival pod helps St Edward's College win manufacturing challenge

A TEAM from St Edward’s College in West Derby has won an enterprise challenge designed to encourage young people into industry.

The Survitec Group Make It Enterprising Schools Challenge saw pupils create their own mini manufacturing businesses to create new survival products.

The St Edward’s team created a “survival pod” that could be used to assist flood victims.

The second-placed team, from Wirral Grammar School for Boys, created an “inflatapod” that could be used in any disaster situation and was able to house 40 days worth of supplies including first aid, food and drink and water purification tablets.

The event was sponsored by survival equipment manufacturer Survitec, which owns RFD Beaufort in Birkenhead.

The Manufacturing Institute’s Make It campaign manager, Nicola Eagleton-Crowther, said: “Modern manufacturing is an exciting global enterprise reliant upon innovation, creativity and ingenuity and the young people clearly exhibited these qualities.”
