Famous Lewis’s name may return to Liverpool high street

Liverpool resurgent

THE famous Lewis’s brand could make a comeback to the Liverpool high street.

The iconic city department store closed last May and parent company Vergo collapsed into administration.

But now the Lewis’s brand name has been put up for sale and potential buyers have until Thursday (February 24) to register their interest in bringing it back from the dead.

And Nat Baldwin, head of corporate recovery at sale organisers Metis Partners, says he has already been approached by people who want to bring the great Liverpool brand back to life.

Metis is also selling the other “intangible assets and intellectual property” owned by the former Vergo Retail – including another famous old Liverpool brand, Owen Owen.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 4pm this Thursday. Mr Baldwin said a sale could be completed within a couple of months.

He said: “We have been asked by administrators to get the best return for creditors possible and got out to market these several brands to people who might be interested in purchasing them.

“We sold the MFI brand last year for £350,000. We’re probably not expecting that for this set of brands, but that’s the kind of thing we do.

“We understand there to be a lot of local brand value and as a result there’s people out there who might be interested in purchasing these brands to sell products or services.

“It’s quite early days but we have seen interest. We are hopeful and certainly expect quite a lot of interest, given that we have a good set of local brands there, especially Lewis’s. There’s a heritage website, and we know people from Liverpool are really passionate about Lewis’s.

“We certainly think that they will be valuable to somebody, whether an existing business or a new venture or online.”

Metis is selling a “UK registered trade mark protecting the Lewis’s brand” as well as logos and web domain names.
