New Britain Oils unveils £9m expansion at Bootle plant

NEW Britain Oils (NBO) is to spend £9m expanding its recently-opened Merseyside refinery, creating 26 jobs at the site.

NBO, a division of New Britain Palm Oil (NBPO), says the new plant will be equipped to supply the UK bakery manufacturing sector.

The company opened its £18m palm oil refinery in Regent Road, Bootle, in May last year.

It reported earlier this month that the facility, which employs more than 20 people, had seen “strong month-on-month increases in capacity utilisation” in its first six months.

Currently, the plant supplies refined palm oil in bulk form to a number of manufacturing sectors.

Bakery fats make up approximately 40% of the overall demand for palm oil in the UK.

The new facility, which will come on stream in spring next year, will offer a range of margarines and bakery fats for use in pastries and cakes, puff and shortcrust pastry as well as shortenings and bread fats.

NBO says the bakery industry is moving towards using more sustainable ingredients like palm oil.
