LIVERPOOL ONE has been named “Best of the Best” at the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) awards, in Las Vegas.
The 1.6m sq ft scheme, which opened in 2008, beat off competition from retail and leisure developments around the world, including Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and Sydney. The ICSC award honours the most outstanding examples of retail design and development, sustainability, marketing and community service.
Liverpool One was representing Europe, having won the Continent’s award in Prague last year.
Grosvenor Britain and Ireland’s chief executive Peter Vernon, who collected the award, said: “We are all enormously proud of Liverpool One, and part of that pride comes from having developed not only a commercial success, but one that provides a vibrant, urban environment for the people of Liverpool.”
Chris Bliss, estate director for Liverpool One, added:Š“It’s wonderful to have had those achievements recognised on an international level.
“Liverpool One’s success was hugely contributed to by the close working partnerships we established with local councillors and other key stakeholders across the city.”
Liverpool One has largely shrugged off the effects of the recession, despite opening as the economic downturn took hold. Although individual retailers have been affected, the scheme has usually managed to replace departed tenants and is currently 98% let.
Sales are also strong, with the Royal Wedding and Easter helping sales rise last month, up 19% on April, 2010.
