Merseyside firefighters hone rescue skills on university student accommodation block

MERSEYSIDE firefighters were afforded a valuable opportunity to test their search and rescue skills by construction company Ocon.

The firm, which is developing the £34m Vine Court student accommodation site for the University of Liverpool, on Chatham Street, set up a training exercise on top of a 150ft crane.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service team came to the aid of a stricken crane operator, in this case a dummy that had been placed in the crane cab.

It also gave the crew the opportunity to work closely with the HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) paramedics who have recently joined them at Croxteth Community Fire Station.

Search and rescue team watch manager Steve Thomas said: “The exercise was a valuable opportunity to practise our rope rescue procedures and also to carry out realistic joint-agency training with our colleagues from the North West HART team at an off-site location.”

The fire crew ascended to the crane cab using a specialist rig before “rescuing” the dummy and lowering it to safety.
