MP Esther McVey calls on Merseyside to bid for Government’s ‘Green Bank’

THE Government should base its Green Bank in the Liverpool city region, says Wirral West Conservative MP Esther McVey.

She has called on business and political leaders to fight the region’s case for the initiative, which Chancellor George Osborne announced in his March Budget.

The bank will invest in low- carbon initiatives like renewable energy and the development of new, clean technologies

Ms McVey said: “The creation of the Green Bank here would be a massive boost for the area, providing job creation and kudos, especially with the loss of the Royal Liver after its merger with Royal London.

“I have written to our Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) asking for their support and to Mark Prisk MP, Minister for Business.

“The minister agreed Liverpool could be considered, but as yet the only cities making representations are Edinburgh, Bristol and London.”

Lorraine Rogers, chief executive of The Mersey Partnership, whose own background is in investment banking, said: “It is likely to be a very competitive process, and our case needs to be compelling, so we need to work collectively to promote our expertise in the low-carbon sector and in banking.”
