Acas launches guide to Facebook and Twitter

A GUIDE to the employment aspects of blogs, Twitter and Facebook has been launched after complaints that workers were abusing social media.

The conciliation service Acas said logging on to social media sites had “rocketed” in the past decade, with around six out of 10 staff using them at work.

Firms said many people were checking the websites or sending messages instead of working, or even posting derogatory comments about managers or colleagues.

Acas said employers should consult with staff and unions over the use of the internet at work and make clear the consequences of breaching any policy.

Acas chief executive John Taylor said: “Online conduct should not differ from off-line conduct. Employees should assume that everything they say on the internet could be made public, and should think whether they want their colleagues or boss to read it.”
