St Helens pickler Bartons in Tesco poll success

A TRADITIONAL St Helens pickler has been hailed as the essence of Northern food.

Supermarket giant Tesco asked customers to nominate their favourite local product and Bartons Pickles received the most votes across the North West.

The family firm, which was founded in 1905 by Edmund and Lydia Barton, has been supplying Tesco with its distinctive piccalilli for more than 10 years.

Bartons director and fourth generation pickler Joanna Jenna said: “We’re really proud of our range of pickles, so it’s great to have them recognised by Tesco.

“We started supplying our piccalilli to our local Tesco store in Prescot 10 years ago because the manager had so many requests for it, and now a range of our pickles is stocked at 60 Tesco stores across the North West.”

Caroline Bartrop, Tesco regional marketing manager for the North and North East, said: “Bartons Pickles range was such a success when it launched in Tesco stores in Merseyside that we knew our customers across the North West would love them, too.”
