Fortune 50: 2nd: David Moores and family

David Moores

2: David Moores and family, £1.2bn

THE family whose name is synonymous with the city may have escaped the worst ravages of the credit crunch having spent the last few years exiting their high- profile business roles.

David Moores and his extended family sold Littlewoods pools and then received £750m for the Littlewoods retail business – which has been rebranded as Shop Direct but retains its Liverpool location.

His 16-year tenure as chairman of Liverpool FC ended in 2007 when he sold his stake for £90m to Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett. With the benefit of hindsight, all of these sales look timely.
