Fujitsu workers vote for industrial action

Workers at Japanese giant Fujitsu have voted to take industrial action in a row over jobs, pay and pensions, it was announced today.

Unite said 74% of its members voted in favour of a strike while 92% said they would back other forms of industrial action.

Union leaders were meeting today to decide their next move following the ballot result. Unite said 4,000 workers were being affected by the company’s plans to close the main final salary pension scheme.

The union also claims that Fujitsu was also planning to force through the changes by dismissing employees later this month and offering them employment on new contracts which involves different pension arrangements.

Unite said the company had also imposed a pay freeze on staff earlier this year while the union is still fighting plans to cut 1,200 jobs.

National officer Peter Skyte said: “Unite members are asking why they should lose their jobs and tighten their belts when the company paid out £150m to shareholders last year and £1.6m to two directors as compensation for loss of office.”
