Breath of fresh air begins a busy day

Su Brown-Kenna, tourism account manager at New Mind internet consultancy in Liverpool

SU BROWN-KENNA is the tourism account manager at New Mind internet consultancy, in Liverpool. She was previously employed by the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board within its IT department. This is her day.

6am: The first priority of the day is to take the dog for a walk. It’s my turn in the morning and my husband’s duty in the afternoon. I live in Lancashire, in a lovely little village surrounded by countryside, so it’s a great way to start the day with a bit of fresh air. This morning, I am working from our office in Liverpool and then I have a user group meeting with tourism clients in the North West. So I have just enough time for breakfast and then jump into the car to Liverpool.

8am: I arrive at work and review my diary for the day. I love the diversity of my role. I never have two days the same. Today I have a busy and important day ahead of me. I will meet colleagues throughout the morning to review current projects and discuss client requirements, so that I can then work on writing and preparing the quotes and proposals.

9am: I spend a lot of my time communicating with clients via e-mail and on the phone, discussing new ideas and ways to improve their websites and increase revenue. My first client meeting of the day is a teleconference with a tourism client looking to add new functionality to their current website, which already features a wealth of tourism information and the opportunity to book accommodation online.

11am: Just time to answer a few more emails and then it’s time to meet a colleague to discuss future developments and innovations to our software and content management systems.

12.30pm: Grab a sandwich and then head over to Warrington for the afternoon’s user group meeting. I make sure I have all my meeting notes and agenda copies with me – just in case.

1.30pm: Arrive at my destination in Warrington, and the user group meeting commences. The user groups are a great opportunity for me to engage with my clients, to present what’s new and what’s planned for development, and for us all to share our latest news and analyse current trends and business. Today, we also looked at how we can harness the use of new technologies and discussed some new and exciting projects.

4.30pm: The meeting has finished. However, I stay behind to talk to a client about a new mapping project to be developed for their websites. Then I make a brief call to our support team at the Liverpool office to check on the progress of some changes requested.

5pm: On the way back to the car, I receive a call from my colleagues in the Winchester office and we have a quick catch up and chat about the user group meeting and outcomes.

6.30pm: Arrive back at home, and just have a little bit of time before dinner with my husband to catch up on any e-mails and messages from the afternoon. The night is my own, and it’s just as well as I have so much to organise at home.
