From swaying tower to classic Father Ted

RICHARD MADDOCK is the station director of Radio City and oversees the output of Radio City 96.7, Magic 1548 and in recent weeks has been driving the launch of a new station – CityTalk 105.9. This was his day, early last month.

6.45am: Wake up to the alarm screaming in my ear – how come no matter how much sleep you get it always feels like you've only been in bed for 10 mins? Take a moment to come to and then switch the radio on to hear what Kev Seed and crew are up to on Radio City 96.7.

7.05am: Seedy tells me we're only 359 days away from Christmas (we'll probably start seeing Christmas trees in shop windows next week then) and it is “Nation- al Bring your Dog To Work” day. We're considering getting an office dog in the Radio City Tower but we’re not sure we’d get any work done. Plus, we’re 450 feet above any lamp-post, so it may not be the best idea.

7.15am: Crawl into the bathroom and put Keiron Fox on Magic 1548 on that radio. With Radio City 96.7 in the bedroom and Magic in the bathroom, our house tends to resemble Dixons first thing in the morning.

7.45am: Another radio goes on in the kitchen – that is the third now. Get my usual reminder about “switching things off” from my other half. Have breakfast before running the usual gauntlet of getting the car out of the garage without the electric door trying to decapitate me.

8.55am: Arrive in my office, which looks out over St George’s Hall. The outside wall is floor to glass window, and on a clear day I can see Blackpool tower from my desk. In high winds, the tower sways seven inches, so it sometimes feels like we work on a boat.

9am: Anne the cleaner brings me my morning cup of tea, and I spend 20 minutes looking through the Daily Post. Open up the early mail and get a great surprise – our two European radio award trophies have arrived (one for Pete Price and one for our news team). We are already the UK's Sony Radio Station of the Year.

10.30am: Staff communications meeting, so we all gather in the Zoo at the top of the tower and each department gives a run-down of what has been going on during the week. This is followed by a playlist meeting. Probably the most important meeting of the week for Radio City 96.7, as this is where we decide what new songs to put onto the playlist and what songs we don’t.

1.30pm: Lunch with comedian and Radio City presenter John Bishop. What always starts out as a lunch about business normally ends up as a one-man comedy show.

2.30pm: Get shouted at by one of our over-worked station engineers. The tower is a building site at the moment, as the new studios for City Talk are currently being installed. Engineer Carl explains to me that no matter how hard I look there are only 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week and other than clone him I will have to wait for him to fix the keyboard that I have just thrown coffee over.

3.30pm: Sit down with the sales director to go through the latest figures. The station is performing really well at the moment and we are about to do some great campaigns.

4.35pm: Do a snoop session with Glen Hunt. Every two weeks, we sit down with the presenters and listen back to a show. Like everyone else in the world, presenters really don't like listening back to their own voice on tape.

6.10pm: Have been number crunching through the latest audience figures on and off through the day. There are some interesting trends going on in the UK radio markets at the moment, and, just when you think that you've got it worked out, something comes along and surprises you.

8pm: Back in Parkgate, and in my usual Friday night seat in The Ship with a pint of Guinness. Pop into my favourite restaurant, The Lobster Grill, and then make it to the Red Lion for last orders.

11.15pm: Back at home after a long day. Sit down with girlfriend Rowena and find a classic episode of Father Ted to end the night.
